Looking for Trouble
Energy Auditor: A professional who searches homes and businesses for issues that can harm structures, drive up energy bills, makes a home uncomfortable and to find possible health hazards.
Most people think an energy audit is concerned mainly with electricity use and think they are going to be told to switch out light bulbs. Surprise! They will not, BUT, if the auditor sees something that does not look right, then for your benefit, you will be told.
An auditor looks at the house as a “whole system” with parts working together in coordination to give you the best of both worlds. SAVINGS, COMFORT and SAFETY!
Jerry Needham, owner of Pro Energy Consultants in the Fox Valley area, does this line of work using his blower door, infrared camera, and his smoke pencil. Some problems are obvious but finding the SOURCE of other problems requires the knowledge of building science and a bit of common sense.
First he has to know more about the problems a homeowner is having, then, he tackles room by room. Things are going quite well, until he sees something through the lens of his infrared that surprises him and the homeowner. It’s an unsuspecting leak in the ceiling that is coming from a bath room on the second level.
Often homeowners are concerned about getting their homes TOO tight, but Needham says the secret is to VENTILATE RIGHT! At Pro Energy we are all about “keeping the air in and the weather out.”
